If There Is Hell Below World Cup Specials. Group F

Click here to subscribe via iTunes

What the jiminy christ!? No football today? But I've become so used to seeing someone kick a ball each day. Guess tennis will do for a day before the Quarter Finals begin with mouth watering matches between Argentina and Germany, and Holland and Brazil.
So the World Cup is filtering out the weak and we're left with the elite, an elite Italy never seemed like joining.

For our Group F ITHB podcast we have homegrown Italo-Disco, Slovenian blippy bloppy electronica indie, surf rock from New Zealand and from the Rock n Roll baron land of Paraguay we find a genuinely great garage nugget.

Group E throws up a lovely little selection from Denmark in the form of some exquisite baroque summer pop, the Dutch equivalent of Spoon, Japanese psychedelic noise renegades and the Cameroonian disco classic that Michael Jackson essentially pinched as his own.

It begins. I feel like I've got a whole month of Christmas ahead of me and I can't wait.
In perfect synchronisation we give you the Group C of musical entries to our If There Is Hell Below World Cup Specials.
A difficult group if only for the fact that two of the countries; America and England are quite possibly
music's richest sources of audible gold. In contrast Algeria and Slovenia may not have as sweet pickings but
we've managed to pluck some gems from the bubbling swamp of cack.

From Algeria we explore the fascinating world of Proto-Rai which infuses Eastern and African influences with a
hint of the west. For England we chose our favourite grumpy barfly and cult hero. From Slovenia we've gone
for an all girl band from the exciting 80's Ljubljana hardcore punk scene and we have in our opinion the greatest
MC and Producer partnership in music representing the U, S of A.

Let the beautiful game begin!

The second group of the World Cup has been aptly named 'Group B'; it features Argentina a country who are managed by quite possibly the most rock n roll man in football - Diego Maradona. In musical contrast we present a band who have been labelled 'the Argentinian Radiohead'.
Greece, Nigeria and South Korea make up the rest of the group and what they may lack over Argentina in football they more than make up for in music. From Greece we take a look inside futuristic musical brain behind Ridley Scott's sci-fi masterpiece. From Nigeria we present the drummer who put the beat in Afrobeat and from South Korean we present a man who in his native country was as big as Elvis, which is where the similarity ends, the man is a prolific Psychedelic KRock machine.

The If There Is Hell Below World Cup Specials kick off.

For the next few weeks the If There Is Hell Below Podcast is going to be slightly different, because we're going to celebrate the joys of this great competition with the even greater joys of music and song.
In the run up to the competition and over the qualifying group stages of the World Cup we will be putting up special bite size podcasts containing music from the competing countries, starting with Group A then onto Group H.
And don't worry non-football fans this is still very much a 'music' podcast.

Here is the first of our World Cup Specials; Group A seemed like a great place to start, we were almost spoilt for choice with the music of South Africa, Mexico, France and Uruguay. We turn to psychedelic rebels in South Africa, folk rock eccentricities in Uruguay, cosmic krautrock is delivered from the unlikeliest of homes in Mexico and the we fall for the charms of the Frenchest man on the planet.
