Spotify Playlist Link: 25 Songs Scientifically Put Together To Appeal to Dads
Fathering Sunday coming up isn’t it. You can’t buy your Dad flowers, after wasting money to get in your mothers good books by buying dying foliage- he realises that they’re a pointless purchase. And do you really wanna edge your father closer to that inevitable heart attack by buying him alcohol or chocolate?
You give your Dad what has been a reliant in his life, you introduce him to old friends, memories of wigging out (when he had something to wig out with) and you put together a killer compilation of tunes you know he’ll like.
I’ve done this, and these songs are almost scientifically proven to appeal to Dads.
I’ve put together 25 songs; they’re not necessarily cool songs- your Dad gave up on cool when “cool” was invented. They’re not obscure- they’ve given up on change it annoys them they need a constant they’re like the first ever iPod with 1gb memory and the battery is depleting, they want the essentials and that is all.
I believe what I’ve created could quite possibly be the ultimate Dad compilation, if your dad doesn’t love the likes of ELO, Cream, Otis Redding, Meat Loaf, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Chicago and if you’re Dad does not like The Boss? Then you should contemplate whether that man is a proper Dad at all.

Glass Candy, Sally Shapiro and Stevie Nicks
Tweet

Ooh went off the rails with posting towards the weekend, this is often the case. I seem to be up to other things when the day begins with 'S', usually enjoying company with drinks and music.
Women week will be coming to an end, my Karen O post got taken down, I don't mind them taking the song off box.net and emailing but taking down my words is annoying.
So thought I'd try and make it up to you by offering a hat trick of ace ladies as I begin to draw Women's Week to a close.
Italo-Disco is a precious hot thing right now, think Glass Candy from Portland best display how lush it is. This song was used in the film Bronson about Charlie Bronson no doubt, the soundtrack is great Pet Shop Boys, New Order via 'Nite Flights' Walker Brothers and round to some Clockwork Orange-a-like classical scoring.
Download: Glass Candy- Digital Versicolor
Sally Shapiro makes disco, she doesn't perform live and she doesn't do interviews it all sounds a bit snooty to me. A lesser man would call her lazy or pretentious. But I like her tunes, they don't sound too lazy.
Doanload: Sally Shapiro- Miracle
And here is Stevie Nicks, she's in a band called Fleetwood Mac who I I don't have a clue who they are.
She stole this from Destinys Child.
Download: Stevie Nicks- Edge of Seventeen

Marnie Stern

"Man, this chick can play" is what I thought to myself like a mysoginst idiot. There aint any doubting she plays some killer, lightning fast, loud licks and yet her twiddling still allows for great tunes.
Man she makes a good noise. Here is a slice of from her precision noise pie of a second album the annoyingly titled if you're attempting to type it 'This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and That Is That' from last year.
The title of the song is obviously taken from a line in a Michael J. Fox film that wasn't Teenwolf (the greatest film ever made).
Download: Marnie Stern- Roads? Where We're Going We Don't Need Roads

Women Week: Joni Mitchell
Tweet
Of all the immensely talented women featured in this here 'Women Week', none of them do to me what Joni Mitchell can do.
In my honest opinion I don't think there are many better songwriters man or woman who could rival Joni.
Her voice is rich and sweet, the delivery of her disgustingly spot on lyrics is perfection and her guitar playing is unmistakable, she's gotta be the greatest female player surely (we'll get to Marnie Stern later in the week)?
It's little surprise that she managed to turn two thirds of Crosby, Stills & Nash into besotted obsessives. Both 'Guinnevere' (written by Crosby) and 'Lady of the Island' (by Nash) from CSN's debut are both songs of adulation to the same woman.
Just listening to her play is enough to see why these men fell in love with her.
My favourite of her albums is Court & Spark, every tune bar the pointless Cheech & Chong collaboration of final track 'Twisted' is dynamite. Click here to listen to it on Spotify
Of course 'Free Man in Paris' is amazing so here that is...
Download: Joni Mitchell- Free Man in Paris
Joni appeared in a little known concert film about the backing band to some folk singer, directed by some gangster film maker. This song 'Coyote' is Joni Mitchell at her storytelling best and features my favourite lyric of hers.
"Coyote's in the coffee shop
He's staring a hole in his scrambled eggs
He picks up my scent on his fingers
While he's watching the waitresses' legs"
Download: Joni Mitchell- Coyote
I'll leave you with this, can't be arsed with an introduction doesn't really need it.

Women Week: Tina Turner
Tweet
Never done a theme on the blog before but thought I'd constrain myself a bit and maybe make things interesting. The theme is broad and doesn't really force too much constraint, in that the only way you qualify to be in the theme is that you aren't the proud owner of a penis- sorry Lady Gaga and the Pussy Cat Dolls I'm still not convinced you're not actually in drag- and you're only getting in on the theme unless the music's great.
Gonna start off with Tina Turner. It's an unfortunate fact that Ike bought the best out of her musically and I'd choose the 110mph thump-a-long of 'Can't Believe What You Say' and dear lord it's best you check your pulse to make sure you're human if you don't dig 'River Deep...' over the yawn-rock ballads she came up with in the 80s.
Here's 'I Like It', it launches straight into your ears and down to your feet a short blast of funk that almost hits 2 minutes. It's a firecracker of horns, Ike's fantastic guitar playing and Tina at her tonsil shaking best.
Download: Ike & Tina Turner- I Like It
EDIT: Trawling through youtube and remembered how good she is in Tommy. This song was purpose built for Tina, she's great isn't she? I mean not when she was doing all that 'Private Dancer' nonsense but when she had some funk to her, some soul, not the sort of drivel Patrick Bateman off American Psycho would listen to while stabbing hookers, but when it sounds like she's put razor blades in her hot lemon and honey water.
Watch this. And it's made even better because Ollie Reed is it and he's godly.

A Nice Thick Slice of Earthless
Tweet

Was put onto these the other week. They really just deal with thick, psychedelic, wigging out, instrumentals which essentially are just face melting long solo's. So that's great right? Correct it is bloody great.
Put up their cover of the Groundhogs song 'Cherry Red', it's a classic but they take second ownership of it. My dear lord how it sends me into a rocking trance.
Download: Earthless- Cherry Red
And as you'd guess they're great live. They're playing the Borderline in London this coming July.
