Rob and Callum return with the If There Is Hell Below podcast and face the grim reality that Is This It came out 10 years ago - it's enough to give Callum a stomach ulcer and go on an ill-informed post-rock rant with Rob. Music wise we have Simon & Garfunkel in Hebrew, brand new tracks from Race Horses and The Fantasies, a cut from 100 Akres Eddie Murphy beat tape, we dig into The People's Temple and question Kitteh Fur. All that and more... more than your deepest desires could ever reach.

The Parvarim - The Sound of Silence
Race Horses - Benidorm
The People's Temple - Axe Man
The Fantasies - Earth Life
Tiger Waves - Down Down Down
Trouble Books & Mark McGuire - The Golden Waste
100 Akres - Prenup ft. Joose
Blasted Canyons - Death and a Half

Soft Machine - So Boot If At All

Soft Machine - So Boot If At All

It seems that nobody ever seems to mention how amazing a drummer Robert Wyatt was.
Take this track for example from Soft Machine's debut album The Soft Machine. Utterly relentless; a cacophony of fill, jazz signatures and killer breaks that lead the grinding discordant keys and driving bass.
It all becomes a bit dreamlike towards the end as the keyboards and drums float around the song like half-thoughts, ideas and images. It's a hint at the jazz-fusion sound the band would later be known for, with Wyatt's under-celebrated drumming at the very heart of the sound.

Gross Magic - Sweetest Touch

Gross Magic - Sweetest Touch by TheSoundsOfSweetNothing

Can't help but think there's gonna be more said about Sam McGarrigle - the man who is essentially Gross Magic - over the next few months. Hype innit. Young lad from Brighton making that DIY lo-fi sounding glam rock pop, like the Ariel Pink Britain didn't realise it had been waiting for.
Sweetest Touch is a sexy little number; sexy in that sexually ambiguous Brett Anderson and Marc Bolan type of way.

Gross Magic have an EP out soon released on The Sound of Sweet Nothing, pre-order here

Introducing: Tropical Ooze

Too Much Light by Tropical Ooze

You can hear why cult pop outsider R. Stevie Moore has chosen as his backing band.
Brooklyn based band Tropical Ooze have that unteachable quality of writing interesting pop tunes with charm, that are unpredictable and tight but also sound like they're a bar away from falling apart.

You can see Tropical Ooze playing with R. Stevie Moore at the following dates:
Aug 4th - The Portland Arms, Cambridge
Aug 6th - Champions, Bournemouth
Aug 7th - 10 Feet Tall, Cardiff
Aug 11th - The Lexington, London
