Rob & Callum present a podcast; this week's show is very (for want of a better word) 'indie'. We have the absolutely stunning new track from Girls and a unabashedly chirpy pop track from Dominant Legs. Callum apologises for bringing the worst song in pod history in, but delights with tracks from Super Vacation, Hoop Dreams and his buddy Steve Malkmaus. There's some unearthed gems from cult figures Dead Moon and Bobb Trimble, more songs and we unsurprisingly have an opinion on the Mercury Music Prize.
Tracklisting
The Super Vacations - Picnic of Love
Dominant Legs - Hoop Of Love
Fonda - Better Days
Hoop Dreams - XCPR
Dead Moon - A Miss Of You
Bobb Trimble - Angel Eyes
The Band In Heaven - If Only You Knew
A Grave With No Name - Origami
Sleeping Bag - Slime
Megafaun - These Words
Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Tigers
Girls - Vomit

Theme Park - A Mountain We Love

A Mountain We Love by Theme Park
Got this through the post (inbox) the other day. They're managed by the same people who bored/gave you with the utterly soul sapping Bloc Party and they have what looks like a strategically placed 'only scheduled gig' coming up soon.
Management obviously believe trickling dribs and drabs, trying to build up hype through contacts and buzz, is the best way to endeer the public to a band. I wish they'd just let bands do this organically sometimes.
Anyway, I dig this for it's Factory Record industrialist motoriks with Orange Juice hooks.
Give 'em a listen.

Free EP: Rimar - Higher Ground

Rimar - Driv Me Crazy
Took a week off blogging; this is close to an eternity in this fickle and thankless arena. Luckily it seems that the kind of R'n'B slow jams and grooves, that this Rimar fellow deals in, are still quite the taste.
I played this EP over and over again - then moved onto something else - but for an afternoon these jams really got under my skin.

Rob & Callum are in a place of zen bliss, the ocean; there are no clubs on the ocean, there is nowhere to buy a Ginsters pasty - just water. All you have is music: the motorik psych rock of Wooden Shjips, the vocal Polish jazz of Novi Singers, the Sergio Leone country soundtrack of Dennis Hopper Choppers, the lo-fi indie scat trumpets of Majical Cloudz, Bodies of Water and a Callum chosen mashup adding some pollution to our once pure waters.
Tracklisting
Dennis Hopper Choppers - Good To Me
Thievery Corporation - Culture of Fear
Wugazi - Sleep Rules Everything Around Me
Wooden Shjips - Lazy Bones
Human Eye - Impregnate the Martian Queen pt 2
Jurgen Muller - Chasing Submarines
Bodies of Water - Open Rhythms
Majical Cloudz - Francisco
Hampton Grease Band - Hey Old Lady and Bert's Song
Part Time - I Wanna Take You Out
JRG - Tired Feet
Novi Singers - My Own Revolution

Charity Shop Gems: SuperEight - From Psychedelia to Psychosis
Tweet
SuperEight - Top Alcohol
SuperEight - Summersong
SuperEight - Bar Snacks
SuperEight - Obit
Today's Chartity Shop Gem comes from a group with a sound that is undeniably 90s.
SuperEight are a bottle of lemon hooch; a Loaded magazine with the saucy pictures of Dani Behr stuck together; they're Eric Cantona karate kicking a Crystal Palace fan; they're the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers; they're Jarvis Cocker mooning Michael Jackson at the Brits; they're Wipeout on your rich mates Playstation...
They sound like the mid-90s - suppose that's what I'm getting at.
'From Psychedelia to Psychosis' was released in 1995; the purple patch where Britpop was balancing on being both credible and popular. The title of the EP is the main reason I bought this, also it being on purple vinyl and being only no. 17 of the limited edition run (after they've given copies to friends, family and one for themselves surely no. 17 is essentially No. 1?).

Lead track 'Top Alcohol' is essentially the bassline from 'She Bangs the Drums' Roses track with Mark Gardener vocals.
There's a song called 'Bar Snacks', they sing about the pub and 'estates', the lead singer can't sing but is drowned in a John Squire-like whammy bar reverb and there's a Jarvis Cocker'esque hush spoken word bit on the last track 'Obit'. They're just a 90s Britpop check list, but after all that, 'From Psychedelia to Psychosis' is not a bad EP, certainly better than anything Menswe@r released - the Britpop shit stick that everything is measured by.

Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra -Bolero On The Moon Rocks
Pulp are doing the circuit, everyone I know is going or has seen them and it's all been thoroughly enjoyable for them to sing 'let's all meet up in the year 2000' in 2011 at a corporately sponsored festival. For me I just got my records, with This Is Hardcore get the most rotations - it's aged the best.
This track, by highly regarded and influential electronic composer Peter Thomas was used as a sample on title track This Is Hardcore, the string samples that would not sound out of place on the Taxi Driver soundtrack gave the track it's hard-edged city street sound; . Strange then, that the song was meant to soundtrack the cosmos not the city, used for Germany's answer to Star Trek the snappily titled Raumpatrouille.

Roe O vs Monk O - Extra Special Category
In between the cracks of the James Lasts LP's (never the good ones) and Bunkington-Squigley Town Orchestra do Chopin records at your local charity shop, you can occasionally... occasionally... find something worth picking up and listening to.
The great coming of the internet has meant that you're not going to find an original pressing of Black Monk Time for 49p, these tend to get swooped up by collectors and sold for proper money.
However, there's still some gems to be found and over the next week or so, I'm going to post up a few records I've picked up from my local Oxfam Music and Book shop in Kentish Town.
I was as smug as a vapid twat from Made In Chelsea upon the first spin of this record, having no idea what to expect I was delighted to find out this was an absolute killer slice of latin Northern Soul.
Only released a few years ago on the Wah Wah label as part of their Dubplate series you can still pick it up for a few quid from Piccadilly Records

Rob & Callum present another installment of the If There Is Hell Below podcast. With talk of Mars Attacks bed spreads, Nas's new medieval inspired album and £10.59 Glastonbury noodles. Music wise; we have below the underground scuzz funk from Stone Coal White, west coast freak pop from Milky Onions, new music from Fanzines amazing new EP, warped hip hop of Shabazz Palaces, a pre-Velvets Lou Reed project, something from Destroyer's (pre)Fab new album, indie nostalgia triggers from Devon Williams, Moonbell and more.
